FAITH
You will surely be surprised after knowing about genealogy of the New Testament (Matthew 1:1-16) begins with the family tree of Jesus. You will be even more surprised when Rahab appears on the list.
You may know that Rahab was the ancestor of Jesus. Find out how, despite being a harlot, Rahab received God's favor and saved from being destroyed along with Jericho.
“Boaz’s Father was Salmon, and Mother was Rahab" (Matthew 1:5).
We all know about her. Bible often refers to her as "Rahab the harlot, and Rahab was also a Canaanite who were the most hated enemies of Israel. Her very exemplary work was lying, think about it.A Canaanite, Harlot and a liar. You wouldn’t think she has a lot of potential to make a list, but she’s there.
Story of Rahab: From the book of Joshua, the Hebrews set up camp at Shittim in the Jordan Valley on the other side of Jericho, and sent two spies to check Jericho's fighting force. The spies hid in Rahab's house, which was built on the city’s wall. The men sent to arrest the spies told Rahab to come out. Instead, she hide them under some stalks of flax which she put there on the roof, saving them from being imprisoned. Rahab said them, that I know the LORD has given you this land, and that you have feared us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are afraid because of you. We have heard that God dried up the waters of the Red Sea when you came out of Egypt and what you did to Sihon and Og, the Amorite kings east of Jordan, you have completely destroyed them. When we heard about this, our hearts melted with fear and everyone's courage failed because of you, because the Lord your God is in heaven above and on the earth below. Now swear to me please that you will be kind to my family, because I am kind to you. Give me a definite sign that you are saving the lives of my family and my relatives - and you are saving us from death. ”
After fleeing from there, the spies agreed to protect Rahab and her family after capturing the city, even if there were to be a slaughter if she would designate her house by placing a red cord out the window.
When the city of Jericho fell, Rahab and her whole family were saved from the agreement of the spies and were included among the Jewish people.
Rahab's life is a great story with many lessons, but we must not forget that Rahab was a harlot. That was her "business". They hid there because people would become accustomed to seeing strangers coming all night long. We also cannot deny that Her very exemplary work was lying. Is there anything good we can say about her? Yes! She was a woman of faith.
Hebrews 11:31 NIV says, "By faith Rahab the harlot, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.”
Rahab demonstrates her faith in the God of Israel by helping the spies hide in her house.
Faith demands obedience and submission. When our faith is expressed in obedience and submission to the will of God, we are indeed going to be blessed.
By Faith As we can see eventually Rahab the harlot became the part of Jesus’s ancestors,as she saved herself and as well as her family.
The same grace that Rahab experienced is now available for you and me. I urge you to come and be forgiven in the name of Jesus. He has already made the first move. The next step is up to you and me.
