The wicked one tempts Joseph to destroy God's plan for his life. Joseph was alone in a strange land far away from his home, with no human responsibility. He was a standard young man with a normal sex desire. The temptation to engage in a sexual sin is one of the most difficult and challenging thing to escape for every young people. His master's wife, who was above him, was the cause of his temptation. And it wasn't just a one-time temptation; it happened on a daily basis. All of these aspects conspired to make it a tremendous temptation for Joseph.
How was he going to get through it?
What was his formula for the success to overcome that temptation?
Joseph was aware of the essence of sin. He recognized that sleeping with this woman would not be a matter of his personal problem. But all the sin is ultimately against God. Joseph not just understood the nature of sin, but he also avoided it. In verse 10, the Bible says that he "denied to be with her." However "he ran or flee away" even more if the women attempted to compel Joseph to sin with her (vs. 12). There will be a situation or times in life when we should strive and fight the temptation, but there would also be moments when we should flee away from it! "Flee away from the wicked desires of youth..." urges the Scripture in 2 Timothy 2:22. (Also look 1 Timothy 6:11) To understand when and how to fight by standing up or when to fight or battle by running, we require God's wisdom to discern the right path. Let God help everyone to discern the right path and understand his Words.
